Events: The Umbrian Calender
From Orvieto to Perugia and from Gubbio to Todi there are many medieval towns and villages that host festivals and shows throughout the year. Festivities and fetes have always been part of the cultural life and typical traditions of Umbria. There are historical parades and re-enactments, food and wine festivals, artistic exhibitions and music festivals.
The following folkloristic events have worldwide fame:
La Corsa dei Ceri of Gubbio, held in May to celebrate the patron saint of the town, Saint Ubaldo
Il Mercato delle Gaite of Bevagna, held in June. The whole village brings its medieval districts back to life with historical markets and artisan shops.
Il Calendimaggio of Assisi, held in May. The inhabitants of the town dress in medieval costume and are transformed into courtly ladies, knights and merchants.
La Giostra della Quintana of Foligno, held in June and September, is a re-enactment of the seventeenth century horse tournament and a procession of renaissance personages.
L’Infiorata of Spello, held on Corpus Domini Day, when the medieval city is covered in carpets made entirely of floral arrangements.
Cultural and Musical events:
Umbria Jazz, is a famous international festival of jazz music held in July at Perugia.
Umbria Jazz Winter, held in December at Orvieto.
Todi Arte Festival, held in August
